Xue Li

Ph.D. Candidate

University of Washington, Foster School of Business

My name is Xue (pronounced "shu-eh"). I am an accounting Ph.D. candidate at the University of Washington, Foster School of Business. I will be on the 2024-2025 academic job market.

My research explores the role of social media in business, with a special focus on understanding how firms and their stakeholders respond to viral online discourse using unstructured data. I am fascinated by the powerful role social media plays in empowering individuals to challenge corporations and influence societal norms.

In my dissertation titled "Investor Political Ideology and Responses to Polarizing Boycotts", I examine the stock market response to polarizing social media boycotts, finding that this response is negative on average, and even more so when more online investors are ideologically aligned with activist challengers (i.e., social media users boycotting a firm).

I will graduate with my Ph.D. in Accounting in 2025. Previously, I earned an M.S. in Applied & Computational Mathematics & Statistics and an M.S. in Accounting from the University of Notre Dame, as well as a B.A. in Accounting from Peking University. I am a licensed CPA in the State of Illinois with work experience in budgeting and financial planning.
